Secretary of State James F. Byrnes announced tonight that American consulates will be opened in Germany about March 1, at Berlin, Bremen, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich and Stuttgart.
He said that the inter-departmental committee which has been investigating the situation in Germany regarding the emigration of refugees and displaced persons in the American zones of occupation, has reported that the largest number of the DP’s are located near Munich and Stuttgart. For that reason, the consulates in those cities have been instructed to grant visas within the quotas authorized by law to qualified persons resident in those districts on Dec. 22, 1945. The other consulates at Berlin, Bremen and Frankfurt will consider such cases in the near future.
The announcement said that full information about the requirements is being circulated in the various camps in Germany. Relatives or friends in the United States who are able and willing to give financial assistance and assurance of support to qualified displaced persons should communicate with the appropriate consul through the State Department, it was announced.
Byrnes reiterated the desire of the American Government to join with other governments in accepting as many of the refugees and displaced persons as possible.
