The Union of Polish Rabbis today called upon Jewish communities in Europe and America to hold special prayers tomorrow, when the Polish Jews will fast in protest against a Parliament bill which would ban kosher slaughtering.
Throughout Poland. Jews will repair to synagogues to voice prayers against passage of the bill. The fast day will be followed by a month of mourning during which no Jews will eat meat and no weddings or other celebrations will be held.
Meanwhile, in Poznan Jews today refused to buy meat in protest against an edict already in effect there prohibiting the Jewish ritual method of slaughtering animals.
All over the country anti-Semites pressed for bans similar to Poznan’s. Polish newspapers supported the drive, with the exception of the Socialist press, which characterized the campaign as a moral and financial attack upon the Jews.
Kosher slaughtering was banned by President Wieckowski of Poznan last Saturday by promulgation of an edict under which animals must be stunned before slaughtering. This violates the Jewish code of observances.
