A recommendation that the United States, as the leading world power, should take upon itself the responsibility of planning and preparing post-war relief for the people of Europe, suffering from mass-starvation and epidemics, was made here today in a report submitted by the Executive Council of the American Federation of Labor to the 62nd annual convention of the AFL which opened here yesterday. Another recommendation urges that racial equality be assured in the European continent after the fall of the Nazi regime.
William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, addressing a protest meeting against Nazi atrocities held at the Royal Park Hotel here, pointed out that what is happening to the Jews of Europe “is our business.” He emphasized that the campaign which Hitler started against the Jews was but camouflage to hide his preparations for the present war. “How could any community witness the expropriation of the Jews, the deprivation of their civil rights, their displacement from the economic life, the beatings and the concentration camps and the pogroms, without becoming aware of the danger to itself?,” he asked. He expressed his confidence in the defeat of Nazism and in the post-war establishment of a democratic society where there will be no destination between people as to race, religion or color.
