A grant to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for recording secular and sacred music in Israel has been made by the ESCO Foundation, according to an announcement today by Mrs. Rose G. Jacobs, chairman of the Foundation. The grant will insure the continuation of this work by Dr. Johanna Spector, musicologist, who for the past nine months has been in Israel recording traditional and folk melodies of the many ethnic groups in the country. Dr. Spector recently received the first Doctor’s Degree in Jewish Music ever awarded to a woman by the Hebrew Union College of Cincinnati. The ESCO Foundation was established in 1941 by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cohen of New York to assist various projects in Israel.
