A 19-year-old New York girl Toby Ellen Saks, won the first prize in the junior section of the Third Pablo Casals International Cello Competition held here under the auspices of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation. Pablo Casals, the world renown cellist, who himself attended the hearings of all 40 contestants, awarded the prizes to the winner. All 40 cellists participated in a special concert here tonight.
Prior to winning the International Casals Competition, the world’s top competition for young cellists, Miss Saks won the Leopold Stokowski award in 1960 and took first prize at the audition in Chicago in the spring of 1960 of the Artists Advisory Council. She appeared in April of this year as soloist with the New York City Symphony Orchestra in Town Hall.
