The Eisenhower Doctrine will have little material effect on the United States aid program to Israel, John Haggerty, the new chief of the U.S. aid mission here, revealed today. However, Mr. Haggerty indicated that he was “certain” that the U.S. would continue its grants to Israel and that in the future there would be more emphasis on long-term loans.
The American aid program, disrupted by the Sinai campaign, will be running smoothly again within two months, Mr. Haggerty told newsmen. He reported that about 60 percent of the staff, evacuated as a safety measure during the Sinai battle, is back at work. This summer, he disclosed a number of experts obtained under a State Department contract with the University of the State of New York, will come to Israel to work during their vacation.
