The fifteenth anniversary of the “American Hebrew,” the leading Anglo-Saxon journalistic advocate of liberal Judaism, was marked by a dinner Thursday evening in New York in honor of the six living founders of the publication. Dr. Isaac Landman, editor of the “American Hebrew,” announced that annual award of a medal will be made to the man or woman in America who achieves the most to bring about better understanding between Jew and Christian in the United States.
A distinguished gathering of representatives of American Jewry gathered at the Hotel Plaza to do honor to Supreme Court Justice Samuel Greenbaum. Cyrus L. Sulzberger. Dr. Solomon Solis Cohen. Rev. H. Pereira Mendes. Max Cohen and Philip Cowen, the six living founders of the “American Hebrew.”
All of the speakers paid tribute to the work of the “American Hebrew in helping to bring about a better understanding between Jew and Christian. The speakers were Prof. John Dewey, Henry Morgenthau, Mrs. Rebecca Kohut. Cyrus L. Sulzberger. Bernard Edelhertz, publisher of the “American Hebrew,” and Dr. Isaac Landman.
Messages of congratulation were received from President Hoover, Queen Marie of Roumania, Wilhelm Miklas, president of Austria; Tytus Filipowicz. Polish Minister to the United States; Sir Herbert Samuel. Julius Rosenwald, Adolph S. Ochs, Dr. I. Levi, Chief Rabbi of France; Lieut-Governor Lchman and Mayor Walker. Messages from representatives of religious groups, including those of all shades of Judaism, were also received.
