American Irish Groups Invite Dublin Jewish Mayor to Visit U.S.

Numerous invitations from Irish-American organizations were dispatched this week-end to Robert Briscoe, Dublin’s newly-elected Jewish mayor, to visit the United States during the coming year. It was estimated that if Mr. Briscoe were to accept all the invitations sent and expected to be sent soon, he would spend his one-year term in office in the United States rather than in his native Dublin.John J. Sheehan, chairman of the annual St. Patrick’s day parade in New York, has dispatched an invitation to Mr. Briscoe to come to New York next March 17 to review the parade. James O’Brien, Deputy Commissioner of the New York City Department of Commerce and Public Events, urged Mr. Briscoe to “be sure to leave St. Patrick’s Day open for us.” Paul O’Dwyer, president of the Irish Institute, dispatched an invitation asking the Dublin Mayor to be the organization’s guest of honor at its anniversary dinner in January. The N. Y. Fire Department’s Emerald Society cabled an invitation to Mr. Briscoe to visit this city soon.The United Jewish Appeal, too, has asked Mr. Briscoe to come to the U. S. A spokesman for the UJA said “we’d be delighted to have him speak for the UJA when he comes to the country.”Mr. Briscoe, who spent several years in New Jersey as a young man between his education in Dublin and his return to Ireland to fight for freedom, also visited his country in 1938 to plead the cause of independence for the Jews of Palestine. An ardent Revisionist, Mr. Briscoe addressed some 600 meetings in Israel’s behalf during that tour.
