George V. Allen, newly-designated Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, and Israel Ambassador Abba Eban met at an informal luncheon today for their first general discussion of the Near Eastern situation including aspects of Israel-American relations. The meeting was viewed as a preparatory step to the resumption of high-level talks between Israel and the United States on regional security matters.
(In London, Israel Ambassador Eliahu Elath called on Anthony Nutting, British Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, to discuss matters connected with British efforts to improve relations between Israel and the Arab states. The only comment made officially on their meeting was that the two diplomats had discussed “subjects of current interest.”)
