The acquisition of a fourth ship for Israel in the United States was announced here today by the American-Israeli Shipping Company. Formerly the S.S. Vancouver County, the Canadian Victory ship has been renamed “Akko,” the Hebrew name for the city of Acre in Israel.
The S.S. Akko will depart for New York on her maiden voyage April 14. It will operate between various Atlantic ports and Haifa. The cargo vessel also has accommodations for 12 passengers, and will carry a group of Israel merchant marine cadets who will receive practical training aboard her.
