American Jewish Assembly to Convene July 1; Elections Not Later Than June 14

The Executive Committee of the American Jewish Assembly today announced July 1 as the tentative date for the convening of the Assembly. The election of the 375 delegates to the American Jewish Assembly to be chosen from Jewish communities by democratically convened conferences or representatives of organizations in communities and regions, will take place not later than June 14. The remaining 125 delegates will be chosen by the national membership organizations participating in the Assembly.

Decisions to this effect were adopted this week at a session of the Assembly’s Executive Committee, presided over by its temporary chairman, Henry Monsky, president of the B’nai B’rith, who called the Pittsburgh conference at which representatives of 32 national Jewish membership organizations voted to convoke an American Jewish Assembly. Ten additional organizations have since been admitted to the Assembly; today’s announcement said. They are the Rabbinical Council of America, National Couneil of Young Israel, Hapoel Hamizrachi, Histadruth Ivrith, Union of Sephardic Congregations, Women’s Branch of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations, National Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs of the United Synagogue of America, American Federation of Polish Jewih Men’s Clubs of the United Synagogue of America, American Federation of Polish Jews, the Federation of Galician Jews and the Council of Fraternal Federations.

The American Jewish Assembly, when it meets, will (1) consider and recommend action on problems relating to the rights and status of Jews in the post-war world; (2) consider and recommend action upon all matters looking to the implementation of the rights of the Jewish people with respect to Balestine; and (3) elect a delegation to carry out the program of the American Jewish Assembly in cooperation with the duly accredited representatives of Jews throughout the world.
