The impact of world events upon the status of Jewish communities in 18 countries in Europe and North Africa is revealed in a 73-page report issued here today by the American Jewish Committee. The report is based on a survey conducted by the Committee from July to November 1950.
The survey established that in the countries behind the Iron Curtain Jewish communities are rapidly losing their cultural identity as a result of Communist government pressure there to liquidate Jewish communal life. As for the Jewish communities of Western Europe, the survey shows that they have never fully regained the sense of permanency which enabled them to maintain a stable organized life before World War II. In North Africa, the main problem of the Jews is their depressed civil and economic status.
