The American Jewish Committee today informed Secretary of State John Foster Dulles that it is “deeply gratified” by the State Department’s announcement that the United States will spend $3,500,000 to finance cultural, scientific, and humanitarian projects in Israel.
In a letter to Secretary Dulles, Mr. Irving M. Engel, president of the American Jewish Committee, said: “We are of the firm belief that endeavors of this nature are of vital importance in developing situations of strength for humanitarian enterprises in foreign countries. We respectfully submit that the extension and intensification by the United States Government of similar projects geared to cultural interrelations and exchanges will serve as important creative sources for advancing democratic ideals in foreign lands.”
