American Jewish Committee leaders who are currently visiting Israel have conferred with top members of the Israel Government and hope to achieve “satisfactory conclusions” of a number of problems which they have raised with the Israelis, Irving Engel, president of the AJC and leader of the delegation, revealed today.
He reported that the Committee group had discussed with Premier David Ben Gurion, Foreign Minister Golda Meir, Development Minister Mordecai Bentov and Minister for Religion Moshe Shapira. The problems discussed included: religious freedom and freedom of expression for all groups, Jews and non-Jews; the treatment of minorities in Israel, and relations between Israel and Jewish bodies abroad.
Mr. Engel told Israeli newsmen that although the AJC was non-Zionist it had consistently supported Israel and helped strengthen it as a fortress of democracy in the Middle East. Thus far, the AJC delegation has conferred with the leaders of all parties inside and outside the government and has visited new development areas and settlements along the Gaza Strip border. The Americans will also visit Arab centers to meet leaders of various minority groups.
