American Jewish Committee Seeks U.S. Intervention for Jews in Libya

The State Department was urged by the American Jewish Committee to protest reported acts of violence against members of the Jewish community in Libya, it was reported today by Morris B. Abram, president of the organization. The number of Jews in Libya is estimated to be more than 3,000.

Mr. Abram told the State Department, many Jewish shops in Tripoli were looted during the past week, at least two Jews have been killed, and Libyan Jews who have sought to leave the country have been refused permission to do so.
