The closing session of the American Jewish Conference voted last night to call another meeting of the organization within a year. The action came after the delegates had voted to restrict the Conference’s functions to rescue of Jews from Nazi lands, post-war rehabilitation of Jewish life in Europe and efforts to secure the establishment of Palestine as a Jewish Commonwealth.
The Conference left to its Interim Committee the decision as to when the third session should be convoked. The Interim Committee was also empowered to appoint a commission to investigate problems connected with religious and cultural rehabilitation of Jews in liberated parts of Europe.
Dr. Stephen S. Wise, addressing the closing session, called on the Jewish labor Committee to remain in the American Jewish Conference. He made a passionate appeal for Jewish unity, and urged all Jewish bodies in the United States to from a united front against Hitlerism instead of fighting it separately.
The Conference demanded in one of its resolutions on post-war action that the United Nations give assistance to Jews in Europe who are the greatest victims of the Nazi and that Jews in ex-enemy countries have their rights restored not only on paper but in fact, and that the restoration of Jewish rights in these countries be carried out without delay.
The Conference also urged the United Nations to institute measures in liberated areas which would rid these areas of the effects of anti-Semitic propaganda. The United Nations were also asked not to treat former Jewish citizens of Axis countries now living in democratic countries as enemy aliens.
