The American Jewish Conference, at the conclusion of a two-day session of its interim committee, today addressed an appeal to President Truman to secure a definite solution of the Palestine problem. Simultaneously, it cabled a protest to Prime Minister Attlee “against the reported intention of the British Government to continue unbearable and illegal restrictions on Jewish immigration and colonization in Palestine.”
Pointing out that the Jews in Europe “have waited long enough and they can wait no longer,” the cable to Attlee says: “Tomorrow may be another thousand lives too late. Tomorrow there will be more Jewish dead in Europe, the victims not of Hitlerism but of broken pledges. We appeal to you to act favorably on President Truman’s request for the immediate admission of one hundred thousand Jews into Palestine and plead with you to fulfil England’s historic pledge to the Jewish people.”
In the message to President Truman, the Conference emphasizes its appreciation of his proposal that 100,000 certificates be made available to permit European Jews to enter Palestine, and pleads for the President’s support” in securing a definite solution of the Palestine issue which recognizes fully the historic rights of the Jewish people to build Palestine as a Jewish National Home and which is in accord with overwhelming American public opinion.”
“We urgently bespeak your assistance and leadership to this end,” the message concludes. “You, more than any other man in the world today, have it in your power to rectify a great wrong and to restore a people long oppressed to their rightful place and status in the world.”
