President Yitzhak Ben Zvi of Israel, the New York Times and Maurice Samuel, American Jewish author, have been named recipients of the Stephen Wise Awards for 1955, it was announced today by Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the American Jewish Congress, which grants the annual awards.
The New York Times received the award for “the uniform excellence of its editorial policy on the subjects of civil rights and civil liberties;” President Ben Zvi for his role in the growth and development of Israel; and Mr. Samuel for his contributions in the field of Jewish culture and scholarship. The awards, each bearing a cash value of $1,000 are presented annually for outstanding service in the major areas to which the late Dr. Stephen Wise, founder of the American Jewish Congress, dedicated his life.
