The American Jewish Congress during the weekend filed a forty-six pace brief as a friend of the court with the New York State Court of Appeals supporting the appeal from the Board of Regents’ ban on the Italian made motion picture, “The Miracle.”
“The Miracle,” one of trilogy of films which won the 1950 New York Motion Picture Critics award, had its license reviewed by the Board of Regents which found it to be “sacrilegious.” Cardinal Spellman, Catholic Archbishop of new York, has denounced the film as a mockery of the Catholic faith.
In its brief, the Congress held that “if the action taken in “The Miracle” case is to stand as a precedent, the state will be compelled to censor every motion picture which any of the hundreds of sects in our population finds offensive.”
