The American Jewish Congress today called upon the House Judiciary Committee to reject all bills that would ease restraints on wiretapping and on the use of evidence obtained from wiretapping. At the same time, the AJC urged the House Committee to outlaw all wiretaps.
In a letter to Congressman Chauncey W. Reed, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Herman L. Weisman, chairman of AJC Commission on Law and Social Action, declared: “The American Jewish Congress regards wiretapping as an invasion of essential rights of citizens, justifiable, if at all, only under the most dire necessity. We believe that the existence of such necessity has not been shown.”
