American Jewish Congress Declines Judge Proskauer’s Proposal for Informal Conference

The American Jewish Congress announced today that it has declined the invitation of Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, president of the American Jewish Committee, to join in “an informal conference” with a view toward developing common action on the basis of a three-point post-war program presented by its Peace Problems Committee.

In a letter to Judge Proskauer, Rabbi Irving Miller, chairman of the Congress executive committee, declared that the Congress as a constituent part of the American Jewish Conference cannot undertake to join with Jewish bodies which are outside of the Conference. Such action, the letter declared, “would be destructive of the unity of American Jewry” which was established through the American Jewish Conference.
