Dr. Selman Waksman, Nobel Prize winner in physiology and medicine and director of the Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers University, tonight received the American Jewish Congress Award of Honor for services to mankind. Three hundred persons attended a dinner here to honor the co-discoverer of streptomycin.
The bronze plaque was presented to Dr. Waksman by Dr. David Rittenberg, Professor of Biochemistry at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. A sponsoring committee of 150 outstanding personalities in science, law and public affairs, including Nobel Prize winners Crs. Harold C. Urey and Glen T. Seaborg, undertook the project of honoring Dr. Waksman.
