The American Jewish Congress today commended President Truman for asking Congress, in his message to the Special Session earlier this week, to eliminate “the gross injustices of the Displaced Persons Act of 1948.” At the same time, however, the A.J.C. urged that the present legislation be amended to include as eligible immigrants the 5,000 Jewish refugees living in Shanghai since the late 1930’s.
In a letter signed by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, A.J.C. president, the organization said that “because of the email and oversubscribed quotas of their countries of origin,” the Jewish refugees in Shanghai cannot under existing legislation enter the U.S. easily.
The President was also lauded today by the Jewish Labor Committee for urging in his message to the Special Session the adoption of legislation which will end discrimination in employment in government and private industry.
