The American Jewish Congress today protested against the persecution by Moroccan authorities of members of the Bahai faith in that country as a violation of religious freedom. In a letter to Ali Benjelloun, Moroccan Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Joachim Prinz, national president of the Congress, expressed the group’s “deep distress” that three Bahai believers had been sentenced to death, and others to lengthy prison terms, following their conviction two months ago for their religious activities.
Dr. Frinz wrote that the trial of the Bahai members appeared to be a violation of the United Nations Genocide Convention, which Morocco has ratified and which commits all signatories to prohibit any act within its territory intended to destroy in whole or in part any racial or religious group.
