Zionist and non-Zionist leaders tonight hailed President Truman’s granting of full recognition to Israel. Statements issued by the Zionist Organization of America and by the American Jewish Committee called for active U.S. support of Israel’s application for admission to the U.N
Dr. Emanuel Neumann, president of the Z.0.A., said that “American Zionists feel rewarded for their years of political struggle.” He congratulated the Government of Israel “upon its triumph” and added that Jews in the United States are “the “thrilled” over President Truman’s action.
Jacob Blaustein, president of the American Jewish Committee, and Irving M. Engel chairman of the executive committee, in a joint statement “warmly” welcomed Truman’s announcement. “In extending full recognition to Israel,” the statement said, President Truman has given inspiration to the democratic forces of the world. The next step is restoration of peace to the Holy land and a seat for the now state in the councils of the United Nations.”
