Major American Jewish organizations involved in civil rights work urged limitations on Congressional filibustering this week-end.
Spokesmen for the American Jewish Congress said “significant civil rights legislation can be enacted at the coming session of Congress if an effective rule against filibusters is adopted.” The American Jewish Committee noted that Congress “has not passed any civil rights legislation for more than 80 years” and suggested that filibustering be stopped. The Anti-Defamation League took gloomy view of prospects for civil rights legislation until a bi-partisan bloc of Congressmen committed to such legislation establishes a “comfortable majority in both Houses.”
