Establishment of the American Jewish Archives collection and study of important American Jewish historical materials was announced here by Dr. Nelson Glueck, president of the Hebrew Union College.
This is the only department of its kind west of the Alleghenies. Dr. Jacob ##arcus, who occupies the Adolph S. Ochs Chair of Jewish History at the College, ##he director of the Archives. The nearest similar department of the kind is that the Library of the American Jewish Historical Society in New York City.“In the years past, many valuable congregational records have been lost as a result of fire, flood or decay,” said Dr. Marcus in issuing an appeal for the gift or the of manuscripts and rare prints. “We urge the congregations of America to send their material, such as and including their minute books, constitutions, cash backs, journals, ledgers, daybooks, and other record books including those of births, happy to retain these records. Or, if the congregation prefers, we shall pho##at and return the originals to the lender.”
