The Joint Distribution Committee, United Hias, and Agudath Israel are stepping up their activities here on behalf of Jewish refugees from Hungary. About 14,000 Jews are among the escapees from Hungary. Of the total, more than 2,900 have been helped by United Hias to emigrate to other countries.
Theodore Feder, JDC director for Germany, is here now in charge of the JDC’s emergency program for Hungarian Jews in Austria. A veteran in work on behalf of refugees, who has headed JDC operations both here and in Germany, Mr. Feder is now coordinating his organization’s emergency activities here, with a staff recruited from various European countries.
Special attention is being given under-the JDC program to Orthodox Jews among the refugees. Orthodox Jewry has also been assured more care by the arrival of Michael G. Tress, president of Agudath Israel of America, who brought with him $30,000 raised for Hungarian-Jewish relief by members of his organization.
Agudath Israel has rented the 104-room former Continental Hotel, where it has established living quarters for 500 Jews who, until now have been sleeping on floors or benches in local synagogues or Hebrew schools. The organization has also established three kindergartens for children of the Jewish refugees from Hungary. Additionally, three kosher meals are being provided daily to about 1,000 of the refugees.
