American Jewish organizations joined with Germany’s U.S. ambassador to commemorate German Jewry’s growth 60 years after the Holocaust. American Friends of Lubavitch co-hosted Monday evening’s event at the German Embassy in Washington. Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger noted that Germany’s Jewish community is the third-largest in Europe today and the fastest growing, partly because Jews feel comfortable with Germany’s efforts against anti-Semitism. “Only together can we credibly and effectively fight anti-Semitism,” Ischinger said, addressing Jewish groups that included B’nai B’rith, the Anti-Defamation League, the World Jewish Congress and the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy. Rabbi Levi Shemtov said Germany has earned renewed Jewish trust. “They destroyed us 60 years ago, but they want to build a new future,” he said.
