Thirty-one camp guards and doctors at the ?torious Buchenwald death camp were today found guilty of a number of war crimes by ? American military court. The sentences will be announced Thursday.
Among the defendants was Ilse Koch, widow of the camp’s commandant, who was larged with having lampshades made from the skins of her husband’s victims. Others included a German Prince, Josias zu Waldeck, and a Dr. Edwin Katzenellenbogen, who ?aimed U.S. citizenship and who was reported to be a Jew.
At the conclusion of the four-month trial, all the defendants except Katzenelenbogen pleaded for their lives. He told the eight-man tribunal, which was headed by Brig. Gen. Emil Kiel, that “you have placed the mark of Cain on my brow. Any doctor found guilty of what you found me guilty deserves to die. I ask you to apply ?e highest therspy in your hands.”
In another courtroom here two former members of the Gestapo were sentenced to be hanged for the beating, torture and morder of Jewish and other prisoners at Camp ?sen I, a satellite camp of Mauthausen. They are Hans Giovanazzi, an Italian, and ## Schmitz, a German.
