American occupation authorities in Austria have refused a French demand that they readmit to the U.S. zone 69 Jewish refugees arrested by French military police following a battle between two groups of DP’s at the Wiesenhof DP camp, near Innsbruck, it was learned here today.
The French insist that the Jews whom they arrested are all from the U.S. zone, while the Americans will admit only those who they establish are former residents of their zone. The 69 will be screened before the Americans make a decision.
Meanwhile, it was established that the dispute, which resulted in the death of one Jew, Israel Kogut, 20, and the wounding of three other DP’s arose when the group from the U.S. zone attempted to convince a number of residents at the Wiesonhof camp to illcgally cross the Austro-Italian border, en route to Palestine.
