Five hundred pounds of matzohs are causing enigmatic trouble between the United States and French Morocco, it was revealed ## today.
The matzohs were sent from the United States to Moroccan Jews for Passover ### are being held up by allegedly anti-Semitic port officials who supported the very government, according to word received here by Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy, of Wis###in, from an American Legion post in Casablanca.
Sen. McCarthy reported that the Legion quoted the port control officer as evening “the matzohs shall not be released until your celebration is over.” This officer, according to the Legion, was connected with one of the Vichy officials who the American landings in North Africa in 1942.
McCarthy said that the matzohs, according to his information, were sent to ### gratis to be distributed to needy Jews. Be quoted the local port authority ## saying, “No, it must be piled up until it spoils or at least until after the Jewish holiday is over.”
A State Department spokesman noted that the United States has had a number reports of trouble with port authorities in Morocco but that withholding of the ##over matzohs is the first specific case brought to its attention.
