American-sponsored Radio Liberty today broadcast from here a special Chanukah program to Jews in the Soviet Union. The broadcast described the origins of the holiday and how Jews throughout the free world would mark it for eight days, beginning Friday evening.
The broadcast contained no political connotations and its contents was limited to historic facts giving the details of the partisan war conducted by the Maccabees against the Syrian tyrant Antiochus Epiphanus. The Chanukah story was accompanied in the broadcast by traditional Chanukah music in Yiddish and in Hebrew and included the ceremony of kindling the Chanukah lights.
