The American University in Beirut and the British Council there have been ordered to remove from their libraries all books dealing in any way with Israel, it was reported here today from Lebanon. The orders were issued by the Lebanese Ministry of Education.
T. W. Murray, director of the British Council, said that “we have been careful in selecting our books to avoid giving offense but if a library contains an encyclopedia, it obviously contains references to Israel. ” He also said that he had informed the Ministry that the British Council library was “a center of research and not for the propagation of views. “
The Lebanese Education Ministry recently charged that the British Middle East Center for Arabic Studies at Shemlan was “a spy center on behalf of Israel. “
