The American Zionist Council today cabled a protest to S.Z. Shragai, head of the immigration department of the Jewish Agency in Jerusalem, who in statements in the Israeli press charged the American Zionist movement with being uncooperative and placing obstacles in the path of Jewish emigration from the United States to Israel. Mr. Shragai was asked to repudiate his statements “immediately.”
“Through your attendance and participation in the May 16 conference in New York,” the cable to Mr. Shragai said, “you are surely aware of the time and planning devoted by the American Zionist Council in fostering aliyah from this country. The reports that the aliyah resolutions emanating from our conference were suppressed are completely fallacious, They were released and given wide circulation along with other resolutions.” The cable was signed by Nathaniel Rothenberg, chairman of the administrative committee of the American Zionist Council.
