The American Zionist Emergency Council today urged the British Government to commute the death sentence imposed by British authorities on Dov Gruner and other Jewish youths in Palestine, and also called upon Acting Secretary of State Acheson “to make an earnest effort” to secure these commutations and to “impress upon Great Britain that only further aggravation of the problem can follow the further imposition of death sentences against Jews resisting the oppressive British regime in Palestine.”
In wires to Mr. Acheson; the British Ambassador in Washington, Lord Inverchapel; and the Acting High Commissioner for Palestine in Jerusalem, the Council pointed out that its request for the commutation of the pending death sentences was being made “in order to decrease existing tensions in Palestine and in the interest of a peaceful and just solution of the Palestine question.”
