Americans and Western Europeans comprise ten percent of the 6,563 students from all parts of the world who have graduated in the past three years from special Hebrew language courses for immigrants, conducted by the Jewish Agency and the Israel Ministry of Education, the Jewish Agency reported here today. The report notes that only two percent of Israel’s total immigration stems from American and Western Europe.
The courses, known as “Ulpanim,” are of five and six months duration and are given at special boarding centers located in several Israel cities and at a number of agricultural settlements. Twenty-six Americans are presently enrolled in “Ulpanim” which were organized, for the first time this year, exclusively for English-speaking tourists and professionals who plan to seek jobs in Israel, the Agency report said.
