Amnesty International, a privately sponsored organization that champions the rights of political prisoners, announced that it would send representatives to the Middle East to obtain further information and evidence on the treatment of Arab prisoners in Israeli jails. The organization’s executive committee said it had reviewed an earlier report on the treatment of the prisoners but Israel’s reply to that report had left “many questions unanswered.”
