Among the former Social Democratic leading officials who were transferred to the Woellsdorf concentration camp after having been kept in jail since the crushing of the Social Democrats, are the Jewish Socialists, Professor Karl Friedjung, Deputy Heinrich Allina, Councillor Friedrich Schleicher and Dr. Emil Maurer.
The Socialist leaders have been held in the crowded Vienna prisons without charges being filed against them. None of them participated in the revolt itself, since they were arrested as soon as it began. Most of them are elderly men who have occupied leading positions in the Vienna Social Democratic city administration.
The families of the men are compelled to pay the Dollfuss regime more than a dollar a day are their maintenance in the concentration camp. A few days ago the Austrian government released a large number of Nazi leaders confined in the Woellsdorf camp to make room for the Socialists.
