An American player for one of Israel’s top basketball teams was arrested on suspicion of felony assault.
Will Bynum, a guard for Maccabi Tel Aviv, was taken into custody and remanded Saturday after police found evidence he had run down a Tel Aviv man while escaping a brawl outside a nightclub.
The victim of the hit-and-run was hospitalized in serious condition.
Maccabi Tel Aviv chairman Shimon Mizrahi said Bynum was innocent of wrongdoing and had fled a mob attack at the nightclub, where he was celebrating his 25th birthday. Assailants had smashed Bynum’s windscreen and the player had no knowledge of hitting anyone, Mizrahi said.
A trial date is pending.
