An audience of ten thousand persons is expected to greet Professor and Mrs. Albert Einstein when they come here Sunday afternoon for the state’s official welcome as residents of New Jersey and for the testimonial dinner in the evening. Weeks of preparation by a state-wide reception committee, of which Governor Moore is honorary chairman, were brought to a close this evening and he event is expected to be history-making for New Jersey Jewry and also to net a considerable sum for the settlement of German-Jewish refugees in Palestine.
Elaborate arrangements are being made by local police officials to safeguard the two distinguished guests. They are scheduled to arrive at 2 p.m. from Princeton where the professor is now engaged in research work at the Institute for Advanced Studies. They will be met by members of the official committee as well as police and the party will proceed to the 113th Infantry Armory where the testimonial concert and reception will be held. The principal addresses will be delivered by Governor Moore, Dr. Einstein and Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, who is flying to the scene from his home in Cleveland.
STARS WILL PARTICIPATE
Participating in the concert will be Mine Ernestine Schumann-Heink, who came from the Pacific Coast to sing at the affair; Giovanni Martinelli, tenor; and Oossip Gabrilowitsch, noted pianist.
Rabbi Julius Silberfeld, of Temple B’nai Abraham, this city, will deliver the invocation at the afternoon event, and Rabbi Heuben Kaufman, of Paterson, president of the New Jersey Rabbinical Association, will pronounce the invocation at the dinner in the evening. Viola Philo, soprano, will sing.
Speakers at the evening event will include Rabbi Silver, Ralph E. Lum, prominent non-Jewish lawyer of this city, who will extend a welcome on behalf of the community; Dr. Einstein and Mayor Harry Bacharach, of Atlantic City, who will act as toastmaster at the dinner which will be held in the Mosque Ballroom.
Mayor Bacharach is chairman of the state reception committee and Mayor Ellenstein of Newark is treasurer. A group of distinguished Jews and non-Jews is acting as honorary vice chairmen.
REPRESENTATIVE CROWD
The event will culminate weeks of preparation and planning and will draw attendance from all sections of the state. Sale of tickets is in flood tide and virtually all the lower-priced seats have already been sold. The concert tickets range from one to five dollars and the dinner is twenty-five dollars per couple. Originally the reception had been tentatively scheduled for Atlantic City, but because of popular demand that it be staged in the state’s metropolis, the switch to Newark was arranged.
The following well known Newarkers are at the helm of four important committees: Samuel J. Kessler heads the reception committee; Louis C. Schwartz the finance and patrons’ committees, and Dr. Leon Mones the speakers’ committee.
Governor Moore recently visited Professor and Mrs. Albert Einstein at their Princeton home and extended the invitation for the reception, reassuring Dr. Einstein that the funds realized will go to further refugee settlement projects in Palestine.
