An internal audit faulted Israel for dangerous breaches of air safety standards.
Israel’s Army Radio broadcast excerpts Tuesday of a 48-page report compiled about the Civil Aviation Authority at the behest of Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz.
The report, which was commissioned following a near collision of passenger planes over Israel and authored by former Air Force chief Amos Lapidot, called for an urgent overhaul of Ben Gurion Airport’s air-traffic systems, specifically the control tower.
It also recommended that a long defunct extra runway at the airport be restored to use in order to prevent congestion amid incoming and departing planes.
The Civil Aviation Authority said in response that it had already begun a $250 million upgrade program at the airport which should be completed within two years.
