An Iraqi politician who has suffered attacks for his closeness to the West and Israel rejected talk of an alliance with Sunni Muslims against Shi’ite expansionism. “We have an Iranian problem, an Ahmadinejad problem,” Mithal al-Alusi told JTA last Friday, referring to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. “We do not have a Shi’ite problem.” A number of think tanks and some Bush administration officials advocate an alliance of Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and moderate Iraqi Sunnis as a means of containing Iran and its proxies in Lebanon and Iraq.
