An Israeli court is considering whether to honor a U.S. request to extradite a Chasidic man charged with defrauding U.S. federal and state grant programs out of millions of dollars. Chaim Berger was arrested in Israel at the request of American authorities earlier this month. He was indicted in 1997 along with six other residents of the predominantly Chasidic community of New Square, N.Y., on charges of using the grant money’s for personal purposes.
