An Israeli Knesset committee voted to deny funding to a conversion institute that had been touted as a partial solution to the “Who is a Jew” question in Israel. The vote against the institute, reported in the Forward newspaper, was made with only two fervently Orthodox members of the Knesset Finance Committee in attendance. The vote denied an Israeli Treasury request for $1.6 million for the institute, which was created in 1999.
