An Israeli officer was shot and killed Thursday by a Palestinian gunman near Tulkarm. Capt. Harel Marmelstein was killed as his unit was searching for wanted terrorists in a village near Tulkarm. Soldiers returned fire and killed the gunman, a local Hamas leader.
