An Israeli soldier could be doomed to die in captivity if Israel does not meet Palestinian ransom demands, a senior Hamas official said.

Moussa Abu Marzouk, a Hamas leader based in Lebanon, warned in an interview published Sunday that Israel should free the hundreds of jailed Palestinians sought in exchange for Gilad Shalit, who was seized in June 2006 on the Gaza border.

Otherwise, Marzouk told Kuwait’s Al-Kabas newspaper, “Shalit will remain with us and we shall negotiate over his bones.”

Israel has signaled a willingness to allow a prisoner amnesty but balked at freeing hard-core terrorists on Hamas’ release roster.
