With the Government taking over control of meat supplies, the Oldgate meat market, which for 400 years had functioned as the center of the London kosher meat trade, closed down today. Most of the city’s Jewish butchers had been supplied by the Oldgate market, from which hundreds of tons of meat were delivered weekly. In the future, the kosher meat trade will be conducted at the Islington slaughterhouse.
