A number of Sephardie Jews were among the 6,000 inhabitants of the city of Gwadar on the southwest Pakistan coast awarded to Pakistan today by the Sultan of Muscat and Oman. The Sephardic Jewish community in Gwader is of ancient origin.
The city, and a surrounding enclave of 299 square miles, is situated on the north shore of the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. The territory was ceded to Pakistan by the Sultan as a gesture of goodwill. The British Government handled arrangements for the peaceful transfer. Pakistan’s Jewish population is estimated at about 650, mostly in Karachi.
