The ruins of an ancient synagogue which existed possibly in the third century of the present era have been discovered along the eastern banks of the Sea of Galilee at a place called Er-Rafid.
Dr. E. L. Sukenik, archaeologist of the Hebrew University, who discovered the remains, reported that the neighborhood was probably once the scene of a large Jewish population. Huge basaltic stones, from which it is conjectured the synagogue was built, were among the discoveries.
